Much like other posters, I read your Globe and Mail profile. I have been enjoying looking through the photos of your creative clothing and have to say, I adore this look. The pop of pattern with the bold tights compliments the colour of your lilac top and unique vest/scarf top. I also love the lines of that skirt. Too bad those boots aren't very functional because the gray is lovely. You are a fashion delight!
Those are some fantastic tights - are they 2 layers of material? white over blue. or are they blue with white print? love to know more about where to source the material. thanks Great work!
The leggings are two layers - a solid teal pair with a holey, light blue pair over top - and then with a pair of black socks over both. The holey stuff I've had around for a long time as part of my 'weird fabrics' collection. I'm always on the look-out for good layering fabrics for texture. I've used this same fabric (in different colours) for dance costumes that I've designed in the past so I already had an idea of what it's characteristics would be. I'm pretty sure I got the fabric from Dressew on Hastings St in Vancouver but it was a while back so not very likely that they would still have it. You never know though!
MakeShift is an art and research project that examines the relationships between 'making', 'clothing' and 'living'. The basic premise for the project is that for a period of one year starting on September 1st, 2009, I will only wear things that I have made myself. Initially this may seem like a reasonable task, but it will include all of my clothes, socks, shoes, underwear, coats, jackets, hats, bathing suits, accessories and anything else I might need to protect my body from the elements while trying to lead a fulfilling life.
Beyond being a nail-hammering, speed-sewing, room-pacing, hair-raising, life-enriching personal challenge, I hope to gain some understanding of the limitations of clothing and how they affect the development of ideology. Ultimately, I would like to examine the role of clothing as a form of cultural production.
I hope you will participate by leaving comments on this blog or stopping by the space for a visit. Makeshift is meant to be an exploration of ideas so the conversation that develops will become an important part of how the project unfolds.
