Day 212

Day 211

I just want to thank everyone who has left comments on the blog to date - it's been a big motivator for me. Well, mostly. The other day someone from France said she thought my style was "horrible" and though my ego wants to believe there was some sort of language barrier and perhaps she doesn't know that I'm making everything that I wear, part of me also knows that my "style" hasn't exactly been progressive as of late. Progressively shabby, maybe. In a way, though, that comment does serve as motivation for me too. To pull it together!

Anyway, I would like to remind everyone (because I get questions about this a lot) that to leave a comment just click on the time that is just below the post. I've had half a year to figure out another way to leave comments but really, I'm just not very blog savvy. Sorry!

Also, on the topic of comments, I have to admit that if you really would like a response it's better to email me. Generally the questions that are asked in the comments section seem somewhat rhetorical so I usually leave them at that. A really common question that I have answered in past comments is if I am designing all the clothes and making my own patterns. The answer to that is yes, I design the clothes and draft or drape the patterns. Occasionally I will take something apart to see how it's made and to gain a deeper understanding of the steps involved in the construction. I did this with a pair of shoes before I even started the project to see if I would really be able to make a pair of shoes. It was a big help. I have also done this with a bra, some undies and recently a pair of gloves. It's a good way to understand how something is made and I recommend it for anyone learning to sew.

Days 209 and 210

Day 208

This may not be great news but I just made four new black t-shirts. I know, how awfully boring. But what can I say? Like water I'm going for the easiest path these days. I have considered only making black clothes for a while but with Spring in the air, it just doesn't seem right. I have to admit that for the past month (or two) (or three) survival has definitely been winning over fashion sense. I'm hoping that this season change will inspire me to freshen up a little.

oh, and some socks and undies... Yawn.

Day 199 - Snap Workshop

I will be conducting a "workshop" inside Holly Ward's Pavilion, which is a geodesic dome that she built (and had help building : ) at Langara College!

Here are the details:

Saturday, April 3 1-5pm
Snap Shop: Modular Accessory Workshop

Everyone knows how miraculous snaps are. Not only are they the ultimate fastener, they are extenders, create pivot points, make things removable and of course, are cute and round. Now is your chance to snap together your world. Come to this Snap Shop and make something fun and functional! Use provided materials to make a bag or a belt or an apron - or something far less conventional if you prefer. Or bring something useless and turn it into something useful! Maybe you have an ugly belt and a lonely change purse - bring them together to make a fabulous tool belt! Add a pocket to a hat! Make a sausage-link belt! The possibilities are literally endless."

Fee: $10.00, payable by cash only at the door.
Enrollment is limited to 8 persons, and will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.
To register, email Natalie Purschwitz at: info@huntandgather.ca subject heading: 'Workshop' to enroll.

Participants should consider bringing:
things to add to or alter
strange objects or materials that you think could get snapped
sharp/fabric scissors if you have them

Day 198 - Super! Surprise! pick ups

Can you believe it? New shoes! They've been almost done for so long and now they are finished! They are clogs with wooden soles, rubber on the bottom, leather (lined with fabric) uppers and upholstery tacks. Not super comfortable but they look good, don't they?

It's Super! Surprise! pick up day 2 today. I'll be at Makeshift from 2pm to 7pm. Come on down if you have a surprise to pick up!

And yes, that is a green scarf for St. Patrick's Day.

Days 194 & 195 - Sweater Fort!

Yes, I know, I'm wearing my coveralls again. It's because I'm going back to the Sweater Fort! For Family Fuse! If you have little ones, bring them to the Sweater Fort today at the Vancouver Art Gallery. I'll be giving away gifts from 2 - 4 pm.

Yesterday was the first day for Super! Surprise! Round 3 pick ups. The next pick up day will be Wednesday (the 17th) from 2 - 7 pm and then the following Thursday (the 25th) from 2 - 7 pm.

And here are a few pics of the Sweater fort. The last one is an inside view though it's pretty hard to get a sense for what it's like inside from a photo. you'll just have to come down and see for yourself!

Day 193 - Fuse tonight!

Hi all, please come visit me at Fuse tonight at the Vancouver Art Gallery. I've made a sweater fort and starting at 8pm I'll be giving away free wearables inside the fort. There are over 100 gifts but it's first come first serve! Alternatively, if you have little ones, I'll be there again on Sunday for Family Fuse from 2 - 4pm. It's free admission to Family Fuse since the BC Pavilion is still open so come and take advantage of both!

Day 183 - Half Way!!

Well, I can hardly believe it but I'm exactly half-way through my year today. The past month has been so busy and I haven't had much time to make new things for myself so hopefully this milestone will be a motivator to get back into the swing of things. I have a lot of half-made things so it seems like the appropriate time to finish those things up.

Days 181 & 182 - Yay Canada!

Yesterday was a big day here in Vancouver. It was the last day of the 2010 Winter Olympics and it ended with Canada winning the Gold Medal in hockey. It was a real knuckle-whitener of a close game with the US, and when Canada won, we went out onto our deck and could hear the entire city cheering. It went on for hours. (This video was taken about an hour after the game - that wind sound is actually people cheering!) Who knew I could ever get so excited about hockey!

And on a less exciting note, here is today's outfit. It's a bit chilly so I'm wearing an underskirt. Which is kind of like an undershirt for the legs.
