Day 4

This crazy Vancouver weather is really throwing me off - hot then cold then hot then cold. As always in this fair city, layering is key.

Based on some recent conversations and ponderings I would like to add a few more rules.

First of all, I would like to clarify that I don't feel the need to make 'tools' or things that I carry around such as my ipod, phone, swiss army knife etc. Though conceivably some might consider these things to be 'worn' because they are in my purse, I think of them more as being 'brought along' for the ride called My Life.

Having said that, though, I will only wear purses that I have made myself. This was determined through a discussion the other night when luggage came up. I was questioning whether or not I needed to make my own suitcase to go to Toronto at the end of the month. We concluded that a suitcase is not worn but a purse is. OK. I may end up trying to craft something though, just for fun. I'll see how it goes.

Also, with regards to make-up, hair products etc. I have decided that I don't have to make things that are applied to my skin or hair. Back at the round table, the jury was in favour of actually trying to make the stuff! As much as I think this is a great idea, I don't think I'm ready for that yet. Sorry!

Day 3

I made this jumpsuit in anticipation of the project. The idea of having a couple of 'uniforms' around relieved some of my anxiety about having to come up with something new to wear everyday.

I have always been interested in how uniforms have the ability to affect the psyche. Just by putting this jumpsuit on, for instance, I am suddenly ready to get to work in my studio. I also feel a (possibly false) sense of protection - from the elements, from dirt and grime, even from social conventions to a certain degree, almost like the uniform itself is my excuse for the very fact that I'm wearing it. It's like a disguise but it's actually the opposite.

*Special Note*

I have to apologize for my blogging ineptness. I'm learning this as I go so please bear with me as I fumble through the blog fog! I've been getting a lot of comments and am only just getting to some of them now. Sorry!

the rules

I was recently describing this pair of sunglasses that I've been working on to someone and he asked me how I was going to make the lenses.

So this leads us to The Rules...

If I'm talking about making everything that I wear, you may be wondering how the rules for the 'making' part have been determined. That's where the beauty lies - they haven't! Not yet anyway. I hope to develop a set of rules as I go. As a simple starting point I will say that my wardrobe will consist of anything made by me from either new or used materials. Materials can be reused but just altering something doesn't count.

I guess this will be the beginning of a set of rules to be added to on an ongoing basis.

RULES

1. My entire wardrobe will be made by me out of new or used materials.

Going back to the sunglasses/lenses question, I feel comfortable saying that since I'm not obligated to make the materials, I can reuse lenses from old sunglasses. So let's add

2. I don't have to make my materials, however, I will aspire to do so whenever possible.

getting ready to jump

Precipitous Preparations

Besides making one decent pair of shoes, some further steps to set myself up include making prototypes in advance.

Since I’ll be participating in Kelly Lycan’s show, WHITE HOT, in late September (an entirely white flea market at TPW in Toronto),

I have been making all of my prototypes in white.

an evolutionary leap

Lasts! At last.

I now understand the importance of these simple wooden forms. I'd always thought
they looked so benign and silent, as though they’d been casually left behind by some life-sized marionette in lieu of a pair of shoes.
